Antti Louhivaara’s more than 30 years of acoustic development work comes together in loudspeakers whose foundation is not merely component selection, but the controlled behavior of sound in a room. Wavelength-based thinking, a horizontal fan-shaped dispersion pattern, and constant-directivity radiation form the basis for loudspeakers that deliver an exceptionally high amount of direct, clean, and natural sound to the listening position. Loudspeakers designed by Louhivaara have received widespread recognition both in Finland and in the international hi-fi press. His work includes, among others, the Amphion Argon2 and Xenon, Aurelia Magenta, Cerica, Graphica, and Cerica XL, as well as the new ALD models.
At the heart of ALD’s design philosophy is the relationship between the loudspeaker and the listening room. Wavelength-based thinking guides the dimensioning of the drivers, waveguides, and cabinet structures so that the loudspeaker operates naturally according to the sound waves it produces. The horizontal fan-shaped dispersion pattern, in turn, directs the sound toward the listener in a more controlled way and reduces the impact of floor and ceiling reflections. When this is combined with constant-directivity radiation, the result is a loudspeaker that delivers an exceptionally high amount of direct, clean, and natural sound to the listening position. The outcome is a precise, deep, and convincing soundstage, where the influence of the room recedes and the music’s own space can emerge.
