The ALD A10 is a constant-directional supercardioid radiator with a horizontal acoustic fan-shaped dispersion pattern. Instead of the traditional spherical pattern, the sound waves here propagate in a fan-shaped manner throughout the entire frequency range, except for the very lowest bass range. The A10 has a lower cut-off frequency of 60 Hz, which acts as a crossover frequency with the subwoofers used in conjunction with the speaker.
Constant directivity is achieved by placing four 6½-inch Nanomatrix midrange drivers in the A10's line-mounted resistor enclosures, whose directivity is adjusted to supercardioid. The speaker is thus almost constant-directional from about 100 Hz onwards.
The upper frequencies are reproduced by a new innovative triple tweeter system that produces a horizontal acoustic fan (Horizontal Fan-shaped Dispersion – HFD).
This allows the A10 to reproduce the entire frequency range in a way that the sound waves travel towards the listener in a fan-shaped pattern rather than the spherical pattern typical of traditional solutions. This virtually eliminates reflections from the floor and ceiling. The sound created at the listening position is much more direct and purer than with traditional speakers, resulting in an exceptionally stable and holographic stereo image.
Even high-quality conventional speakers often have vagueness in the 200–500 Hz range due to room interaction. Thanks to the constant directivity, this range has also been brought under "fan-shaped" control in the A10. This allows the A10 to draw instruments razor-sharply and the acoustic haze around the instruments is removed. Since the low-mid frequencies do not reflect off the front wall (SBIR phenomenon) or the side walls in the same proportion as with a conventional speaker, the phase response remains exceptionally clean. The listener hears a direct sound without the room acoustics that mess with the low-mid frequencies.
When you combine a vertical "fan" pattern with a horizontal supercardioid pattern, the result is a speaker that acoustically "dissociates" from the room.
